Major Contributions to Teacher Education

  • Integrated Teacher Education Programme (ITEP):
    • By 2030, the minimum degree qualification for teaching will be a 4-year integrated B.Ed..
    • This “dual-major” degree combines subject expertise (e.g., History, Mathematics, Science) with pedagogical training, saving students one year compared to separate degrees.
    • It is currently being rolled out in a pilot mode across selected central/state universities and IITs/NITs.
  • National Professional Standards for Teachers (NPST):
    • A set of benchmarks developed by the NCTEto define teacher roles and competencies at four career stages: Beginner, Proficient, Advanced, and Expert.
    • These standards will govern recruitment, performance appraisals, and career progression, including salary hikes and promotions based on merit rather than just seniority.
  • Continuous Professional Development (CPD):
    • The policy mandates at least 50 hours of CPD annuallyfor every teacher and principal to stay updated with modern pedagogies and technology.
    • Training is facilitated through digital platforms like DIKSHA and SWAYAM.
  • Shift to Multidisciplinary Institutions:
    • All standalone Teacher Education Institutions (TEIs) must convert into multidisciplinary colleges or universities by 2030.
    • This ensures that teacher trainees are exposed to a broad academic environment including arts, sciences, and social sciences.
  • Specialized Training for Early Years:
    • For the first time, formal training is prioritized for Early Childhood Care and Education (ECCE), including certificate and diploma programs for Anganwadi workers to support the new 5+3+3+4 structure.
  • National Mission for Mentoring:
    • A large pool of outstanding senior/retired faculty will be created to provide short and long-term mentoringand professional support to university and school teachers.
  • Standardized Entrance Exams:
    • Admission to pre-service teacher programs will be through a National Common Entrance Test (NCET)conducted by the National Testing Agency (NTA) to ensure high-quality talent enters the profession.
